Fake FUR for a snowing day!

Like a lot of places in Europe, we had beautiful white landscapes.

I must say that it's sometimes not easy to wear vintage with snow and freezing weather...

The problem is perhaps easier to resolve for men.

First things to look for when you live in our cold areas are nice vintage winter coats.

My husband is  lately searching for hunting or skiing trousers to fight cold!

Vintage coats are not easy to find mainly if you are not a S size...
Often not in good condition or at crazy prices!

Having a nice looking coat is important because even if you have the most stuning dress underneath people will only see your coat... so my advice is to invest a little for a warm and elegant winter!

I quite never wear 30's clothes but Sylvain likes to switch from the 50's to the 30's.

This swing coat is from the 50's, made of gray fake fur!
Fake fur became really fashionnable in the late 50's, not for animals welfare like today but because it was amazingly cheaper!!!

This cap is repro from Mamie vintage shop, look there to find one . They are made of vintage fabrics from the 30's-50's for a more authentic look!

His vintage wool plaid jacket comes also from this amazing shop in Paris.

My dress is from the early 50's bought in a quite poor condition...

I added myself those white vintage buttons and mended it at several places.

This pattern is just perfect for a snowing day!

Look at these cuffs design, lovely!

Love my hubby's style there!!!

I must speak to you about another problem when you are wearing vintage in snow... SHOES!

My advice is to buy 40's-50's overshoes, they are easy to find on Ebay and your feet will be warm and dry!!!

Did you notice my 50's plastic earrings? SNOW FLAKES!!!

But snow doesn't have only good sides... what's your opinion, Sylvain?

Can you tell me more about your favorite winter coat?
Do you also have white landscapes lately?

  1. We've had snow for few months now, and I hope it will all go away at least in april :/ I am not saying I don't like snow and winter, but if it lasts too long it will be a boring view.
Your wintery outfit is very cute though, love the coat and that dress, the whole look as always! :)
I have many winter coats, but propably my favourite is very long forest green coat with huge brown fur collar. :) very 30s!

    Yours sincerely,

  3. You both look fantastic! It does not snow in California where I live but it has been quite cold lately. My favorite coat is a black wool and alpaca number with three large buttons and 3/4 sleeves, most likely early 50s. Made in England but I bought it at a vintage shop in Toronto years ago. It is totally falling apart and thread bare now but I refuse to give it up quite yet ;-)

  4. Both of you look amazing!! I love your dress too. I'm always happy to hear of people like myself who buy shabby dresses and fix them up so they're like new again! :)
I have a vast collection of winter coats but one of my favorites is a 1940's seal fur that I found at a thrift store for a few dollars. It's so warm and soft and I feel like a million bucks when I wear it!

  5. You look darling in your fake fur and snowflakes! Yes, I had a fake fur in the late 50's when I was a kid: it was a pony coat, brown & white! I love Sylvain's looks, too. He looks very stylish wearing 30's clothes. We are expecting a snow storm starting this afternoon and snowing through the night. I don't know what to expect ... we'll see when it ends!! Your pix are wonderful and belong in magazines!!!!!
    Hugs!!

  6. So fashionable in the snow! I always feel like a big blobby when the weather isn't nice, unless we're headed out for something where my closet of coats comes in handy ;) You both look charming!

  7. I have a pair of boots exactly like yours, but I'm afraid to get them wet, boo hoo.

  8. We are so spoiled here in Southern California - it's sunny and warm right now. The pictures of snow (and your outfits) are beautiful and make me wish for a snow day; I've already forgotten that it is still winter time!

  9. That grey faux-fur coat is gorgeous!!! You and Sylvain look amazing, and cozy too.
I grew up in cold, snowy New England so I know how crucial warm clothes are; I have over a dozen vintage coats. It's the only way I can tolerate cold weather, to be wrapped up in something cute ;)

  10. You two even look super stylish in the snow!!! So elegant! :) We also enjoyed the snow this weekend - but now that it's the work week, and the pavements are getting a bit slippery...I'm fed up of it!

  11. I like the colours in your husband's jacket and your lovely fake fur coat. My favourite coat is a mid green wool one with 4buttons and a collar that was my Grandma's best coat in the 1960s.

  12. We have had a lot of snow over the last few months. My favorite winter piece is a blue coat with a fox collar that was my great grandmothers. It is warm and so beautiful.

  13. Your snow outfits are both adorable! I love the dress, very cute. We had a light dusting of snow when we woke up this morning, and it snowed all through the day, but it's all melted now. We live on the coast so rarely get much snow here. Most of the UK is under a good few inches though- I feel a little left out!

  14. Your coat is lovely! I must say that your dress stole the show for me...what beautiful cuffs and button details...and your hat is such a lovely shape, it frames your face so well. I have a long suede coat with fur collar that is one of my favourite winter pieces... if youn want a peek here are two photos. xx Shauna

  15. Here, in Poland, the weather is the same - freezing cold and a looot of snow :) Fortunately, I have my (almost) perfect 60s woolen coat with fur collar, witch keeps me warm :) (it's just "almost" perfect, because - althought it's A-line - it's too narrow to wear a petticoat underneath).
As we're talking about coats - is your fake fur coat really warm? I ask, because I've had some fake fur pieces of clothing, but they were much too cold for me (but maybe the problem is in our Polish winter, not in the fake fur itself :P).
And, last but not least, I need to tell you that you look soo cute in this outfit!

    xoxo,
    Monika

    1. My biggest problem with vintage coat is to find ones that could be worn with 40's or 50's because I love both eras. BUt you are right it's not easy to find one that fit with large petticoats!

  16. You look very stylish and elegant. My favourite Winter coat (other than furs for warmth) is my CC41 double breasted tan coloured wool coat. I bought it last year at the 1940's event in Pickering (England) , it was a bit of an investment as you say, though still cheaper than a good quality modern equivalent. I also found a lovely original vintage felt posy brooch, my weakness, which I wear on the lapel, in shades of yellow, green and orange. To me, those colours are so '40s. I have the same Miss L Fire boots, a good modern option for a vintage look.

    1. I must tell you that I will never wear my Miss L Fire boots in snow, they will probably be dammaged with all this salt they are putting everywhere!

  18. I was recently given a late 40s winter coat and it is gorgeous! It did need a bit of work, but it's now all repaired and I can wear it!

  19. It's so nice to see you two take these adventures together. Your dress looks fabulous. I'd actually say that the buttons make the dress. Very nice touch! So nice to hear you were able to give this dress a second life. I also love your boots! I've been looking for some boot "toppers" but haven't found them in my size. I would think that you would need to get them bigger than your regular foot size? I saw a pair that was 10 inches long but I was hesitant about getting them because I figured you'd need extra space for your shoe.

    1. I wear a modern 7.5 US size and my overboots are marked 7.5. I must admit that not all my shoes can fit in, perhaps a size 8 would have been better. Hope it will help you!

  20. Thank you so much for a great post. I am getting used to the snow here in Grenoble. I have never lived in a snowy place before. I feel like a frump as I have one of those awful padded coats, my vintage coats are not quite warm enough and get wet easily when it is sleeting. But you have given me so much inspiration to look glamorous in the snow. I simply love that grey coat. Merci beacoup pour une tres bonne post! Maria

  21. I'm loving the coat! Funnily enough for an upcoming sewing project I've been picturing a coat in EXACTLY that style, in leopard print faux fur! I'm on a quest to find just the right pattern for it.

  22. Living in Canada, where scads of snow fall every winter, too, I can completely relate to what you mean about how it's not always that easy to wear vintage during this time of the year (especially if, like me, you rarely wear trousers). I get through with lots of layers, tights, and knits, but it can still be tricky to stay warm enough some days. As I said to my husband back in December, each winter I have a renewed respect for the women of past (as in before the 1960s) and how they managed to get through the winters!

You both look absolutely fantastic and very, very stylish in your wintry ensembles.

  25. It's snowing here right now! I have a pair of vintage overshoes but sadly they are a bit too small for most of my shoes, I forgot when I bought them that I often buy vintage shoes a little bigger than my modern shoe size since they're so narrow :(

I am in love with Sylvain's jacket, it's just amazing! And I love your faux fur coat too. It is hard to be warm and look vintage. I have a 50s swing coat with a fur collar that isn't quite warm enough for our winter, but with enough layers it works well!

  26. you guys rock! your dress is so gorgeous ... good advice with those overshoes. i got a 50s pair from ebay some weeks ago - sadly too small. in germany you can't find them easily even on ebay.

  27. You look like a royalty in your outfit; you can easily be mistaken as a queen or duchess! Fur really has this unique characteristic that makes it look good in any season and era. You definitely emit that timelessness!
